there's something wrong with you

I don't know if I plan on doing anything more with this one. Probably not.

you can get addicted to a certain kind of sadness

It's been forever since I've just worked with type and did whatever I wanted, and I've had this song stuck in my head for days. Gotye's 'Somebody That I Used To Know'. The song is beautiful, but exceptionally heartbreaking in a lot of ways. (Click for larger, more readable version.)

The whole album "Making Mirrors" is top-notch, so if you get the chance, check it out. Yep.

somebody i used to know

I've been working quite extensively in my sketchbook as of late, here's some pages. Super delicious cookie points to anyone who can name the either the second or third fellow (without clicking to check the file name, that's cheating. Don't cheat.)

This bottom one here is very much in process. I'll do a post after the holidays to show the evolution of the page. Anyhoooo, as I won't be seeing you til the new year... Happy Christmas/Festive Thing You Celebrate or Choose Not to Celebrate (whatevs) and Happy New Year! To a wonderful 2012, eh?

Best friend

A new guy, his name is Best! There's also other new guys in the works, I'm just super bad about posting them when they're done. But darnit if I'm not trying to be better. "Share the monster love!" Einstein always said. (He didn't actually say that. He said other smart things, like "God does not play dice.")

Oh, he also has a little tail, because he's like a slug monster. Rawr rawr rawr rawr.

temper-temper-temperature

I found a sketchbook and started working in it again a few weeks ago. The cover says "Peeves" and it's made out of the Perspectives magazine. (Thanks, Ringling!) I never notice my dependency on the color yellow until it's staring me right in the face. It's a sunny color. Very apt for a California winter, I guess.

Figure drawings from work (which has been suspended until 2012), and the text in the third is from A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius, which I completely ripped apart for an altered book only because it was thick and had a long title. Pieces of it's insides will show up now and again in lots of things. There's also weird diagrams and things inside, which I collect all magpie-like.

But I'll tell you, dear reader, it sure feels good to be working again. There were weeks (months?) that I was writing a lot, a lot, but not drawing, or making monsters, or doing anything with my hands other than typing on the ol' computer. Now I'm trying to balance things again, but who knows how long that will last, since winter is always that part of the year I hate the most and have a tendency to drop off the side of the world.

In an unrelated note: Did you know Iggy Pop does the backing vocals in Rolodex Propaganda? Go listen to it. I'll wait. ............Yeah! That's totally him! He's amazing! Don't you just want to high five that dude? Yeah, I know! Me, too! Iggy Pop is the coolest. Remember when he was on Pete & Pete? Crazy.

I got a love that keeps me waitin'

Spent most of this week in San Francisco, the city of... something or other. I don't know the city's motto. The City of No Left Turns, perhaps? So, I was visiting for bridesmaid business. I'm Queen of the Bridespeople, you know. All shall fall before me! Except the bride, because she owns my ass.

Line of empty snow beasts, waiting to be filled.

I only took this photo because the bar said "Topless-a-GO-GO." If only every building classed it up like the Condor.

Gangster deli. Frisco is weirdly delightful.

That tall building is the Transamerica Pyramid, and I only took a photo of it because there's a nice shot in the movie Zodiac of it being built (it's animated, but still cool.)

long time, no post, because I'm a jerk

I don't know if people use these blog things anymore? Do they? Do you? I haven't in awhile. But maybe I will again. In the meantime, here's some dudes I made. One is very happy (Ashlyn's design) and one is melancholy (my design). Yup. Ashlyn made some sweet paintings, too, so go check those out.

I might have started a tumblr also, soooooo there's that. I'll be updating that with bits of my zombie story for NaNoWriMo and maybe other things, because it doesn't require me to be logged into my stupid old gmail account like blogger. (That is why I do not update this more often, because it's not connected to my normal email account. If someone knows how I can migrate this thing to that account, I'd be forever grateful.)

Beep boop. Beep boop.

2206

So, long time, no post. I wish I could say I was busy, but I really just forgot my blog existed for a bit there. But I have been drawing a bit. We got a great group of interns this year at the old JJ, and it reminds me of the best parts of Ringling, i.e. drawing all the time. Thursdays are even reserved for cafe sketching down the street. It's grand.

This, however, is from one of our wednesday in-house figure drawing sessions. I colored it digitally in photoshop. I'll also try to be more diligent about posting things here. *nods*

IN OTHER NEWS. The San Diego Comic Con starts TOMORROW and Justin and I will be there with bells on! Not really. I mean, we will, but not with the bells. Monsters. We will have monster shirts on. But yes, BOOTH 2206, right near the super huge DC Comics Pavilion. It's massive, right in the middle of the convention center floor, you really can't miss it. He's selling lots of cool prints and shirts and things, and I'll have monsters for sale like this guy!

So, with that enticing bit of self-promotion all over, uh... I guess I have nothing else to say! COME VISIT ME/US. :D

would you like a cup of tea?

Here's a doodle I did while waiting for a file to open of a very angry bigfoot. I rather think he's angry because he's feet aren't big at all, and all the other sasquatches [sasquatchi?] make fun of him relentlessly. (Tiny feet are a sign of genetic weakness!) THUS, HE IS SO ANGRY. He would be better if he had a cup of tea, I think. Tea can be soothing.

There's also some math in there, because, you know, math is cool. And I do a bit of it now and again.

happy post-its

It's Friday afternoon, and I thought, hey, the old blog could really use a crappy picture of a post-it drawing I did the other day. Huzzah, and the greatest shortest blog post was born!

love a good ramble in the morning

Ha! So! I look very tired, no? It's because (sadly? Not sadly? I honestly cannot tell if this is sad or totally normal) I've been staying up late (for me that's around midnight-1am) to play Dragon Age. To play through it. Okay, twice. Because it's awesome. If you haven't played it, it's awesome. Typical fantasy RPG killing-is-totes-hip-guys type murder spree with lots of chatty-chat. And because I wanted to be Queen, and you can't do that if you're an Elf because everyone is RACIST in the game, I had to re-play as a human. SO, 70+ hours later, here I am. Tired. But very satisfied. And about 4 hours into the expansion because I just cannot help myself. Also, QUEEN.

But you might be wondering: why does she look like a ghoul if she's just getting 5-6 hours of sleep a night? BECAUSE I AM PART BEAR, MY FRIEND. Fun fact: My mother was a grizzly bear that escaped Yellowstone National Park in spring of 1983. She met my father, who is human, I assure you, and fell in love (YES BEARS CAN DO THAT) and two years later they had me. I totally look human, but I require 9-10 hours of solid sleep per day, otherwise my load bar simply does not load. It's like 70%, and you're tapping the computer and going "why in the hell won't Hot Tub Time Machine fucking work. This is shit."

So, in conclusion, this could basically be a snapshot of me today. (My shirt is even green.) But it isn't, BECAUSE I DREW IT. Mmhmm. Yes.

waiting for you

Updated the old bloggity blog. I wanted it to match my Twitter, and sort of be this cohesive thing, because my etsy store just has it's own vibe. So, like it? Hate it? Dislike how I change it every couple months because I become bored? No worries on the last one, I dig this, so I'll probably keep it for awhile.

Here's the old one, for comparisons sake:

In other news, I have a indie craft show this SUNDAY, May 15th, in Long Beach. If you're around, you should come say hi. I'll be at Booth 83, nearish the middle, because I'm awesome. There will be monsters! Among other awesome things! Come, be merry!

disneyland times

I went to Disneyland with Justin yesterday, so here's a drawing! It was really hot yesterday, thus the moody look. The park was very crowded, but I did get on some of my favorites. And I'm very excited for the opening next month of the (long-awaited) Little Mermaid dark ride.

monsters all the time

I might possibly have a monster obsession lately. Monsters of the cute and cuddly and eyeball-y variety, but monsters nonetheless. Also, I've been posting a lot lately too, so hooray for that. Monsters, blog posts, it's like a whole new world up in here. Hope you enjoy these guys, and if you're looking to own one, you can check here for updates on that front.

monsters in your pocket

These are some monster designs I've done recently for these needle-felted monsters (see below) I'm making for Patchwork in Long Beach next month and Comic-Con in July. I think they're pretty great, and they make me so happy I want to clap my hands. Yes! So, if you're at either of those conventions, you should purchase one of my fellas. BECAUSE THEY'RE AWESOME. (In my opinion.)

Fun fact: "Holla" is a frequently used label for my posts. Yes.

self-potrait style

I've been doodling self-portraits in between projects at work, so here's a few. And by few, I mean 2.

quick post

Quick figure drawing from my sketchbook, re-traced and colored in photoshop! Kinda reminds me of that marker stuff we'd do at Ringling, but you know, colors are cool.

here fishy fishy fishy

A few weekends back we went to the Long Beach Aquarium again, and it was utterly fantastic, again! These are pictures I took with the Toy Camera app I have on my iPhone. Despite all the children and people talking about "how tasty that _________ looks" (we wondered if they say these things at the zoo, too... does that koala look yummy?) the aquarium is very relaxed. It reminds me very much of going to Jungle Gardens back at school and drawing the animals. It also makes me miss Ringling quite a bit.

Anywho. Good luck to those of you in school and thesis-ing. It's that final push that's the toughest, because you have to worry about the future while trying to focus on the present, but you all can do it!

you can all just kiss off into the air

Well, I got really into the Violent Femmes [again] lately, sooooooo here's some stuff. It feels nice to bum around in my favorite color palette for a little while. If I find/make the time, I'm going to do a kinetic type piece for this, because those are fun. So you can consider these, uh, storyboards, I guess. :]

found objects

So, something for the ole blogosphere. I was feeling very lazy this last week, and kind of mad at my sketchbook, so I made this to try and fight off the lazybones disease. I love this cow because I can't tell if he's in pain or not.

I named it "Scream, Cow, Scream."
